NICOP Travel Rules 2026: What Every Overseas Pakistani Must Know

You saw the post. Someone shared it in the family WhatsApp group. "British Pakistanis can no longer enter Pakistan on NICOP." Within hours it had spread across Facebook, Twitter, and every overseas Pakistani community group on the internet.

There's just one problem — it wasn't true.

Here's what is actually happening, why it matters, and exactly what you need to do before your next flight to Pakistan.

The Rumour That Broke the Internet (And Why It Was Wrong)

In early July 2026, an airline advisory circulated online and was widely misread as meaning that all British passport holders would be barred from entering Pakistan on NICOP from July 17 onwards — and would need either a Pakistani passport or a Pakistani visa to board.

Pakistan's government spokesperson moved quickly to shut it down, calling the reports "incorrect and misleading."

The clarification was firm: these new instructions are not targeted at British Pakistanis specifically. They apply equally to overseas Pakistanis travelling from the United Kingdom, the United States, Europe, the Gulf, and everywhere else in the world.

One rule. Applied to everyone. No exceptions based on which country you live in.

So What Are the Actual New Rules?

This is the part you need to read carefully — and possibly screenshot for your parents.

If you hold a valid, active NICOP, nothing changes for you. You can still enter Pakistan on your foreign passport without a visa, exactly as you always have.

If your NICOP has expired, been cancelled, or is otherwise invalid, you now have two options: travel on a valid Pakistani passport, or obtain a Pakistani visa before you board your flight.

Airlines have been formally instructed to check NICOP validity at check-in. If your documents do not meet the requirements, you will not be allowed to board. No last-minute appeals. No exceptions.

The UK Foreign Office guidance backs this up — it clearly states that holders of a valid NICOP or Smart NICOP are recognised as Pakistani citizens and may enter Pakistan without a visa for an unlimited period of stay.

Why Did Pakistan Introduce This Now?

Here is something important to understand: this is not a new policy. It is the enforcement of rules that already existed.

For years, passengers with expired NICOPs were quietly allowed to board flights anyway. The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has now instructed both airlines and immigration checkpoints across Pakistan to stop making that exception — and to apply the rules uniformly.

Think of it this way. An expired NICOP or CNIC already blocks you from banking services, SIM card registration, and property transactions in Pakistan. Travel has now been added to that same list.

The FIA has also briefed airline station managers directly, instructing check-in staff to inform passengers of the new enforcement measures before travel.

What You Need to Do Before You Fly

Do not wait until the airport to figure this out. Here is your quick checklist.

Pull out your NICOP right now and check the expiry date. If it has expired, contact your nearest Pakistani embassy or consulate immediately and begin the renewal process. Overseas Pakistanis have already urged authorities to speed up renewal services at Pakistani missions abroad, so the sooner you start, the better.

If your renewal is taking longer than expected and your travel date is close, apply for a Pakistani visa or arrange to travel on your Pakistani passport instead.

Before you head to the airport, confirm your documents with your airline directly — check-in staff have been briefed and they will be checking.

Your family is waiting for you back home, and the last thing you need is to be turned away at the gate over a document issue that could have been sorted weeks in advance.
